Why did I start my own business?

Well there’s different things if we break it down.

I initially had the idea for my business My Social Media PA in 2011. I was working in Digital Marketing and doing Social Media, really enjoying what i was doing but it was very specific to an industry (Music Industry) and there was so many exciting developments at that time in terms of digital and music since i started a few years prior.

At this point i was comfortable in my transferable skills to start taking on niche projects outside my 9-5. So i began getting involved in my own projects as well as working but the business voice inside of me was saying “hey, theres an opportunity here”.

Theres an opportunity because the music industry was moving a lot faster than other industries and the more i was approached to do work outside of music the more i realised that there was a need for my social media services in other industries.

Initially i hadn’t paid much attention to it but the more i did it i felt like i wanted to help create a more long term solution so thats how I came up with the idea. However saying that, that was in 2011i registered a domain www.mysocialmediapa.co.uk but i just left it and i didn’t touch it.

why?

Because I was really enjoying what i was doing, just being in the presence to learn, I was involved everyday, i loved going to the shows, industry parties, working on my freelance clients and even if i didn’t like something the most important thing is that i was still learning so even though i registered the domain i just left it. I got caught up.

Fast forward a year and it had still been in the back of my mind but i thought the jump was too risky but one day I just thought hey this is stupid im being ridiculous this is what i’m going to do.

so i went back on my initial plans read through them, tweaked them and researched. I just had to bite the bullet and go with it, that was the moment I decided i’m setting up my own business and wont be looking back.

I soon learnt having a degree in business management and becoming an entrepreneur are two completely different things. It’s nothing you can really study for. I went on a course, did a business plan, forecasted and this time not only registered the .com but I registered as a LTD company.

Its been a year and I still cant believe im doing it, not only me as now I have a team.

so the main reasons are.

1) I loved what I was doing and quickly saw I could provide my service on a bigger scale.

2) When you’re working for someone you’re restricted in what it is you can do. I wanted the flexibility and freedom to explore different things. Its a way of expression.

3) I always wanted to be a business woman hence my degree, I would have got round to it eventually but taking the leap half came out of circumstance. There’s a gap in the above called circumstances but we’ll touch on that another time.

I’m working hard so i know the future’s bright.

It’s imperative to grow a thick skin as everybody has an opinion on the ‘right way’. I’ve learnt criticism is essential for growth BUT so is learning to trust your inner voice. Where would we be without it?

2012 VISION BOARD

New year……new beginnings? And all that other said things that comes with it.

The first thing i’ve had to do is leave New Years Resolutions as a thing of the past as in reality nothing i’m ever trying to achieve convientantly starts on 1st january apart from fad diets following the festive feastings. And that right there is the problem, i’ve constantly approached New Year Resolutions like many of my failed diets as a ‘fad’ or ‘quick fix’ that never last long….At ALL. And i now realise the moment you set your self up to approach what should be a lifestyle goal as quickie its always bound for failure.

This time ive sat down and thought about my long term lifestyle, goals, choices which i’ve always had and then refined and listed how i intend to get closer to them throughout this year.

In addition for the first time i’ve done a vision board which has been around for years. Oprah is constantly sharing her story about vision boards with ‘Envision your best life‘ and obviously she’s is quite amazingly successful so thought id give it a go and see how it helps me over the course of the year. A vision board is meant to work as a visual daily reminder of what your working towards rather than a one off resolution.

Some things i put down on mine are stepping stones to a bigger picture not just 2012. I split it into career, personal development and lifestyle. Some things are gradual changes, others more immediate or even a bit materialistic but its about what i want to achieve which is the only thing that matters.

I chose to create mine online HERE so i can always access it wherever i am. There’s loads of other ways to do one, you could use word, paper & magazine cut outs or other websites.

Of course i had to add in some leopard print Christian Louboutins……..if anyone is willing to donate to my one pair collection HOLLA

VEGAS!!!

Last month I took a trip to vegas for one of my besties (Antoinette or Annie as i call her) 25th birthday!

Now considering I had just stopped 2 of my biggest freelance jobs it probably wasnt the wisest or most responsible thing to go to Vegas and spend a huge chunk of money without securing the next job!!

But hey you only live once!

Or at least that’s what I reminded myself to justify my trip…….

Annie packed 15 pairs of shoes for a 5 day trip :-S

We stayed at the MGM Hotel

Which had a lions cage (i dont promote animal cruelty but its fur/skin would make for a hot jacket)

Went to the (overrated but beautiful) TAO with an (overrated) que & women in bathtubs like this:

Hit up The Cosmopolitan where id stay when i go again (i won nothing)

As you can see i grew a lil belly cos id been eating breakfasts like these for 5 days

So this is actually not my first blog!

My first attempt was 3 years ago in the form of ‘Pilar Relations’ during my year placement at Warner Music. The plan at the time was to document the life of an intern in the music industry, however things got so manic that I only ever managed one post :-S

Looking back at the ‘About Me’ section though i realise my aspirations havent really changed just broadened! I still LOVE music but im no longer limited to it.

But it’s good to see wise words from a younger me…….“Never lay your eggs in one basket” something i still stand by today and embrace more so than ever.

Since then i’ve discovered the wonderful world of social media mainly covering it for music artists. I’ve always maintained my interest in having my own business however never had a sustainable idea. And now they’ve been a few shifts in my life i intend to embrace the change and use the time to experiment with all things ‘Business + Social media’ while keeping it creative and this time intend to keep up with documenting my experience.
